That my kids are three? When we asked Holly and JD what they wanted for their birthday, their response was always the same. A Darth Maul cake for JD and a Hello Kitty Cake for Holly. I did a lot of internet searching to make sure I came through for them. We didn’t do a big party with friends this year rather had a really fun birthday with Grandma Raab when she was here, thank you for all the toys and clothes,Â and then a party at ChuckE Cheese with our Hopkins family. I had high hopes of decorating the house and being all fun and festive but having just had surgery I was happy to get them a present and make the cakes. Thankfully Grandma and Uncle Matt watched the kids so I could do some cake decorating.

One of the other things JD really and I mean REALLY wanted was Darth Maul shoes. This boy is obsessed with Star Wars and mostly with Darth Maul, and I think it’s only because he’s red. Which is JD’s favorite color, red everything. For months he had been asking to go to Target just so he could look at these light up shoes. When Grandma Raab was here we thought what a great time to give him the shoes we had secretly purchased months ago. The excited on his face was nil. Nothing. Zilch. Nada. We got nothing. Though he loves them now.

Holly was just really excited for her brother and didn’t really care what she got. I love her excitement for her brother. I wanted to buy her another baby but thought she didn’t need one. In the end, Great Grandma and Grandpa Stevens gave her a Target gift card and she bought a new one for herself. They have been inseparable since. Should’ve went with my first thought.

The reactions to the cake were much more exciting, thankfully, because I worked hard on them. I was so happy with how they turned out. Though, as I was looking for a picture of Darth Maul I wondered what kind of mother I was for letting my three year old have such an obsession with this scary character. The kids had a blast at ChuckE Cheese with the family and still talk about the fun. They love their new bikes from Grandma and Poppy. They were instant pros at pedaling and have only fallen a few times.

I’ve seen the idea on Pinterest to interview your kids every year on their birthday and so I thought I would do that. I didn’t record it but it was pretty funny.
