No More Amoxicillan

We returned home from Virginia just in time to go to the doctor before we headed to the snow. All was well except the start of double ear infections. So off to the pharmacy we went to get amoxicillan for Holly. We survived eight days of it before she started breaking out in a rash. I went to work and Cate noticed the break out so she took some pictures. I should’ve taken her to the doctor that day, when I got home her poor hands and fingers were all swollen. I took her to the after hours clinic. The doctor couldn’t say for sure if it was an allergic reaction or a virus but she prescribed benedryl until the rash went away. The next morning it didn’t seem worse or better. Though her poor ear was so swollen it was sticking out, even further. By evening her poor feet were so swollen that her toes were turning purple.  And she would cry every time she got up to walk. Steven was home from school for a week so he, Lanette and John came by to say hi to the kids when Lanette was a little concerned about how she was looking. I had already had a call into the advise nurse and was waiting for her to call back. She did and advised us to take her to the ER or wait for the next appointment at 9pm. Before we left Jim and Steven gave Holly a blessing. How grateful I am to have the priesthood in my home and brothers who honor it! Lanette came with me to the hospital and of course everything was fine and to continue to give her benedryl. The pediatrician said he didn’t think it was an allergic reaction but wanted to wait and diagnose it when we were seen the next day at the after hours clinic. The doctors assured me that she was fine, though she looked horrible! They weren’t too worried about her not wanting to walk either. He made us make her try and that was hard to watch because she was in pain.

We came home, gave Holly some tylenol and some juice and we hit the sack. An hour later she woke up, itching and restless. I turned the light on and I couldn’t believe how bad she had gotten. I gave her some benedryl and decided to take her back to the ER. I said a little prayer, on our way to the ER, for peace and comfort. Her breathing wasn’t bad but man did she look bad. Luckily the same ER docs were still there and came to see us right away. They confirmed that it was Erythema Multiforme, basically a rash all over. But it could affect her breathing and eyes. It never got that bad but they did admit us to a room. They couldn’t draw blood or put in IV in for the longest time because her hands and feet were so swollen. They didn’t want her to get dehydrated so starting an IV was a must. After poking and prodding about five times they finally were successful. That was the hardest part for me too. I was tired and seeing my little girl in pain made me cry too.

Daddy, JD and Lanette came up Sunday morning just as the pediatrician was there. She told us the swelling and bumps should go down within a few days and she should start wanting to get up and walk around soon. We got home, ate some lunch and took a three hour nap. She was looking much better by evening but still swollen and not the same to me.

We went to see her doctor the next day and she was definitely looking like herself. Her doctor definitely said it was an allergic reaction and will not be prescribing Amoxicillan again. Hopefully she won’t have too many more ear infections. Though I did read somewhere that after two years old 60-80% of ear infections heal on their own. Let’s hope so! By that night she was back to her playful self! All photos were taken with my iPhone. Thank goodness for modern technology and medicine!

I’m allergic to amox. too. I had a pretty severe reaction to it when I was probably Holly’s age. My mom said she hated it! I’m sorry it was so rough :(. I’m glad she’s doing better now though

Ugh!! SO SO sad!!! Way worse than Aubrey’s reaction. I’m sorry you had to go through all the doctor and IV stuff. It’s the worst, feeling so helpless. Thank goodness it’s over and everyone came out OK.

This breaks my heart! So much worse then I had imagined it. So glad they got it under control and she is back to herself again. Love those kiddos!

Holy cow I would have been a mess if that happened to us! Wow, you handled everything so well it sounds like! Those pictures are so sad! I’m glad it went away and the doctors figured things out!

Oh…these pictures just break my heart. Poor Holly! I was happy to see the pictures of her looking healthy and happy in her Easter dress. I miss you guys!
